Mental health is a part of our family story and healing starts with honesty.
Lately, I’ve realized that I’ll be speaking about mental health for the rest of my life. It’s not just a passion, it’s a purpose. And I’ve seen how often we long for community, connection, and support, but that kind of healing has to start at home.
The truth is, we’ve experienced mental health challenges on both sides of the family. Some of us are doing the work taking action, creating change. Others may still be struggling, perhaps out of fear, shame, or uncertainty.
But here’s what I gently encourage:
Don’t let silence take root where healing could grow.
Please, be open with your children. Share what you can. Be as transparent as possible not to burden, but to liberate. You never know how your story, your honesty, your willingness to speak, could free someone else in your bloodline.
Our families need truth, not perfection. Courage, not shame.
I’m living out prayers my grandmother whispered when no one was listening. Doing the things she maybe couldn’t, but always dreamed someone in her bloodline would.
